What is a hex flange nut?
Hex Flange Nuts are hex nuts with a wide flanged portion near one end that acts as an integrated non-spinning washer. Flange nuts are used to spread the load placed on the nut over a wider surface area to prevent damage to the installation material. They can come in serrated or non-serrated styles.
Do you need lock washer with flange nut?
The flange on a flanged nut will turn with the nut whereas a washer often will not. The washer, due to its resistance to turning, thus helps to control wear at the mating surfaces. In effect a washer will protect a surface more than a flanged nut. This can be huge if locking washers are also being used on the joint.
